Critical steps in the early evolution of the isocortex: Insights from developmental biology BJMBR
Aboitiz,F.; Montiel,J.; López,J..
This article proposes a comprehensive view of the origin of the mammalian brain. We discuss i) from which region in the brain of a reptilian-like ancestor did the isocortex originate, and ii) the origin of the multilayered structure of the isocortex from a simple-layered structure like that observed in the cortex of present-day reptiles. Regarding question i there have been two alternative hypotheses, one suggesting that most or all the isocortex originated from the dorsal pallium, and the other suggesting that part of the isocortex originated from a ventral pallial component. The latter implies that a massive tangential migration of cells from the ventral pallium to the dorsal pallium takes place in isocortical development, something that has not been...

Antibacterial effect of borage (Echium amoenum) on Staphylococcus aureus BJID
Abolhassani,Mohsen.
Borage (Echium amoenum) is a large annual plant of the Boraginaceae family, which grows in most of Europe and in northern Iran. The borage flower is used as a medicinal herb in France and other countries. Iranian borage is used in traditional medicine for infectious diseases, flu and as an anti-febrile. We tested the aqueous extract of borage dried flowers in vitro for its antibacterial activity. The extract showed concentration-dependent antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus 8327. This activity was heat resistant, but the activity of freeze-dried extract gradually diminished during a 90-day period. The traditional use of Iranian borage flowers for infectious diseases and for controlling fever appears to be justified.

Effect of prestorage curing on storage life, internal and external qualities of sweet orange (Citrus sinensis) Rev. Bras. Frutic.
Aborisade,Abiola Titilola; Ajibade,Ayodeji Adeyeye.
Orange fruits from two seasons, in April and August 2006 representing late 2005 and early 2006 harvests respectively were cured in hot air at 36-37(0)C to 1%, 3%, 5% and 7% weight loss before storage at 28(0)C and 86% relative humidity (RH). The fruits were observed for incidence of decay, further weight loss, juice content, firmness or softening of the peel, total soluble solids (TSS), pH, titratable acidity, and colour during storage. Curing reduced the incidence of decay. All control fruits were rotten by day 21 in August harvest while 22.5% of the control was rotten by day 56 in the April harvest. Storage life was extended beyond 56 days in fruits cured with 1, 3, 5 and 7% in April harvest as there was no decay throughout, while decay incidence in...

Some factors affecting tannase production by Aspergillus niger Van Tieghem BJM
Aboubakr,Hamada A.; El-Sahn,Malak A.; El-Banna,Amr A..
One variable at a time procedure was used to evaluate the effect of qualitative variables on the production of tannase from Aspergillus niger Van Tieghem. These variables including: fermentation technique, agitation condition, tannins source, adding carbohydrates incorporation with tannic acid, nitrogen source type and divalent cations. Submerged fermentation under intermittent shaking gave the highest total tannase activity. Maximum extracellular tannase activity (305 units/ 50 mL) was attained in medium containing tannic acid as tannins source and sodium nitrate as nitrogen source at 30 ºC for 96 h. All added carbohydrates showed significant adverse effects on the production of tannase. All tested divalent cations significantly decreased tannase...

Poly R decolorization and APPL production by Streptomyces violaceoruber and Streptomyces spiroverticillatus BJM
Abou-Dobara,M.I.; Omar,N.F..
Two mesophilic streptomycetes (S. violaceoruber and S. spiroverticillatus) were selected to study their Poly R-478 decolorization ability and lignocellulose solubilizing activity. Both strains were able to degrade Poly R-478 dye and ferulic acid during growth on a minimal salts medium. The Poly R-478 decolorizing activities of both strains were induced by adding different carbon sources to the culture media. S. violaceoruber could decolorize 63% of Poly R-478 after 24 h. Both strains could solubilize straw and produce acid-precipitable polymeric lignin (APPL) with different efficiency. From the major extracellular enzymes recovery of both strains on rice and wheat straw, we can predicate that the biodegradation process was partial indicating a possible...

Effects of the infrared lamp illumination during the process of muscle fatigue in rats BABT
Abou-Hala,Andréia Zarzour; Barbosa,Daniella Galvão; Marcos,Rodrigo Labat; Pacheco-Soares,Cristina; Silva,Newton Soares da.
In this study the effects of infrared lamp illumination during the muscle fatigue process was studied. Three different groups (n=5) were used: one control group and two treated (Infrared Lamp 780-1400nm), with the energy densities of 0.5 and 1.0 J/cm² and time of illumination of 300 seconds. The treated animals were illuminated in one point directly in the tibialis muscle, after the first tetanic contraction out of six, with an interval between each tetany. The results were registered in an electrophysiograph and the intensity of the force of contraction in grams was analysed. It was observed that the control group presented a reduction in the intensity of the force of contraction, while the treated group managed to maintain it, which was clearly evident...

Abouheif,Mohamed; Al-Owaimer,Abdullah; Kraidees,Mansour; Metwally,Hassan; Shafey,Tarek.
Forty Najdi ram lambs weighing 26.6±0.3 kg were utilized in this experiment to determine the effects of feed restriction followed by realimentation and body weight at the onset of feed restriction (30 and 36 kg body weights) on performance and carcass characteristics; feeding and restriction levels were ad libitum, 0.75 and 0.60 of the ad libitum intake. All lambs were slaughtered after 14 weeks of experimentation. The results showed that, during the feed restriction phase, average daily gain (ADG) and feed efficiency decreased as the level of restriction increased. During the realimentation phase, the 30 kg lambs gained weights and consumed dry matter (DM) similarly to the ad libitum group, whereas the ADG for the 36 kg lambs of both 0.75 and 0.60 ad...

ABSTRACT One of the new crop varieties that have been adopted for high yield is the Egyptian faba bean. However, poor-quality faba bean has reduced economic value. Quality evaluation is thus important and can be performed using computational intelligence. We developed a robust method based on morphological features and artificial neural network for quality grading and classification of Egyptian faba-bean seeds, covering five varieties: Giza3, Giza461, Misr1, Nobarya1, and Sakha1. Fifteen seed morphological features were then calculated, and artificial neural networks classified faba beans into different varieties. The results indicated an overall classification accuracy of 77.5% was achieved in training phase and it was 100% when testing dataset was used....

Weed Control in Clean Agriculture: A Review1 Planta Daninha
ABOUZIENA,H.F.; HAGGAG,W.M..
ABSTRACT Weed control is consider the major obstacle for the growers in the organic farming. Lower plant productivity in organic farming mainly related to the poor weed control. It is widely known, in most cases, that losses caused by weeds exceeded the losses from any category of agricultural pests. Under water-stress condition, weeds can reduce crop yields more than 50% through moisture competition alone. In the light of the environmental and toxicological problems created by herbicides, it has become necessary to develop the safety methods for controlling weeds. Soil Solarization, Mulching, Biodegradable Mulch, Natural Herbicides, Hot Water, and Agronomic Practices have been successfully adopted in many countries as safe methods for controlling weeds in...
